by Michele Joynes BSN, RN, CPAN and Kathy Paskewitz, RN, CPAN

The 24th Annual Fall CBSPAN Seminar was held October 9, 2004 at Providence Hospital in Washington, D.C.  There were 73 in attendance representing all of the 4 districts. The overall theme was “Perianesthesia Continuum of Care – Pediatrics to Geriatrics”. Myrna Mamaril, MS, RN, CPAN, CAPA was the key speaker for this educational offering. Attendees were provided with an overview of pediatric and geriatric assessments, special needs and pre-operative preparation. They learned about  the continuum of care and the challenges involved with discharging a patient population where the ages ranged from the very young to the elderly. Those in attendance also learned how to apply critical decision making in their practice with the recognition and management of emergencies by working through various case scenarios.

A presentation was also given by Lori Cosby, BSN, RN, CAPA, one of the ABPANC Directors entitled “ABPANC”. She identified who and what ABPANC is, their mission and vision and described the significance of ABNS Accreditation.

All enjoyed a day of networking with each other, earning CEU’s, winning door prizes, participating in the silent auction and partaking of a delicious luncheon prepared by Providence Hospital.

CBSPAN’s two nominees for “Clinical Excellence Award” were honored with corsages and framed certificates. Susan Bonner was chosen as CBSPAN’s nominee and will go on to represent our component on the National level.

Michele Joynes, CBSPAN’s President, presented Dina Krenszichek with a “Hail, Honor and Salute” Certificate that the component had given to her, in recognition of all of her contributions to the advancement of perianesthesia nursing, at the National Conference in Philadelphia.

Michele also conducted the Annual CBSPAN Business meeting to update members of all the events and business of the organization that have taken place over the past year as well as what to look forward to for the future.

Hats off to Susan Bonner and her D.C. District Team, who were the hosts for this event, for a job well done!
