“Vision in Action: Rebuilding your Component” September 10 – 12

Las Vegas, Nevada

by Michele Joynes, BSN, RN, CPAN, Kathy Paskewitz, RN, CPAN, and

 Betty Jo Wilson, RN, CPAN

¨                   A thank you to all of CBSPAN for sponsoring Shelly Joynes, Kathy Paskewitz and Betty Jo Wilson to this Leadership Institute. We came back charged, inspired and ready to put our vision into action!

The core purpose of this leadership training was to develop leaders by mentoring, providing education and the “tools” for building successful and stronger components. ASPAN leaders from all levels collaboratively demonstrated ways in which the power of self confidence combined with a forward movement can yield a more productive component and organization as a whole. All in attendance were encouraged to learn the “nuts and bolts” of a successful leader as they rotated through the many informative stations with “Bob the Builder” as the theme. “We can do it! Yes we can!” was heard many times throughout the weekend.

Highlights of the Institute

¨                   “Vision in Action: Just the ‘R’ Words” – presentation by Susan

            Shelander, RN, CPAN

          Key points of focus

¨                  Identification of the social norms that impact on

          component organizations

1.      Revitalize your component by respecting the past, redefining

the future and remodeling the approach

2.      Research the membership to include a review of the generation

mix, recruit interest and talent, recognize and reward

participation and ways to retain membership.

What do we do now?  Refocus – Recharge – Re-vision

·         Retention is important: Create a Retention Culture with Retention Strategies

·         Review reasons to belong (programs, discounts worth being a member? Networking with the right people? Effective organization?)

·         Volunteers need to feel part of a community/team, gain higher level of self esteem, set goals, have real jobs/projects to accomplish, involvement in idea development, have recognition for contributions

·         Create a vision that has group commitment

Remember the ‘vision’Vision without action is only a dream. Action

without vision is just wasting time. Vision with action can change the world.”

      Joel Barker, Futurist.

4 Levels of Vision

·         Wanderers – some people never see it

·         Followers – some people see it but never pursue it on their own

·         Achievers – some people see it and pursue it

·         Leaders – some people see it, pursue it and help others see it

Leadership Institute Report continued –

Napoleon Hill:  Cherish your vision and your dreams as they are the children of your soul, the blueprints of your ultimate achievements.”

Susan identified the many hindrances of vision as being limited leaders, concrete thinkers, dogmatic talkers, continual losers, satisfied sitters, traditional lovers, census takers, problem perceivers, self-seekers and failure forecasters.

With Organizational Membership we need to “Paint the Picture” and make people understand, appreciate and ‘see’.

The Successful Leader Levels:

Just the “R” Words:  Read, Realize, Rearrange, Rebuild, Re-certify, Recognition, Recovery, Recruitment, Redefine, Refine, Reflect, Refocus, Refresh, are but a few- - - -

“Certification: The Nuts and Bolts” was presented by Karen Niven, MS, RN, CPAN. Karen describe the requirements for CPAN and CAPA certification and re- certification. She also identified the requirements for special certification test sites. She discussed ABPANC’s vision, purpose and value. For Magnet status 30% of nurses need to be certified. That is the one reason why the interest in certification has grown. As of September there were 6017 certified nurses. ABPANC is proud to have obtained ABNS accreditation. This year at the National Conference we will celebrate ABPANC’s 20th Anniversary.

“Manage Your Business” was presented by Kevin Dill, ASPAN’s CEO.  Kevin identified the steps to create and monitor an effective Annual Budget. Kevin said the budget is the plan and the financial statement is the reality. Non-profit organizations are expexted to earn revenue and spend funds cautiously, and honor the trust placed in them by their members. The budget is a working document, a road map and should be flexible to be able to react to external or internal factors. Components should have an independent auditor once a year and switch auditors every three years. Try to have one years worth of operating funds on hand should hard times arrive. Kevin recommends having Director and Officer insurance. He also identified resources available to Components at the ASPAN National Office. There are labels available for Newsletters and other mailings. ASPAN has display booths for exhibiting at component meetings. “On the Road Programs” are money makers for components.  He defined what an “Electronic Component” is and how it can assist component members and membership overall.  Contact ASPAN at (877) 737-9696.

What Chair Council of Component Means to Me, and What is Next?

Presented by Chris Price, MSN, RN, CPAN, CAPA

Chris spoke of her experiences as the Chair of the Council of Component Presidents and the advent of the Fifth Region and the Fifth Regional Director. Chris feels “there will be better opportunities for regional directors to attend their region’s conferences, board meetings, be more visible and available to their components, districts and members”. She stated, “this in turn will afford increased opportunities for more active integration, participation, and communication”. Chris feels this will support her belief of “we are a product of the company we keep” and together all will enhance their contributions to the society. “The Daffodil Principle” best describes what a combined vision and purpose can achieve. “The principle in this story is one of the greatest principles of celebration. That is learning to move towards our goals and desires one step at a time and learning to love the doing. When we multiply tiny pieces of time with small increments of daily effort, we can accomplish magnificent things. We can change the world.” Chris summed it up in saying, ASPAN has shown all of us how a well seized opportunity, goal and vision can beautify our professional world and practice.”
